從大象家族系譜圖中，可以看出各支系的象類發展。始祖象具備了長鼻目動物的基本特徵，恐象下門齒銳利且向內彎曲，鏟齒象下門齒發展成平鏟狀，猛獁象身披長毛且門齒劇烈彎曲。原今象為現今大象的發展起源，而亞洲象與非洲象則是為現今僅存的大象。

Among the phylogeny of Proboscidea, the Moeritherium had a barrel-shaped body and its limb bones were of a distinctly elephantine type. The Deinotherium had backwardly-curved lower tusks. The Platybelodon had shovel shape lower tusks. The Mammuthus had spiral tusks and thick shaggy coats. The Primelephas led to three branches of true elephants-mammoths, Asian elephants and African elephants, however, the latter two are only living ones.
