In P'uma Elementary School we restarted our Tayal education program.
Kids attended the photography class of Hayung, and saw the world through the lens.
In 2013, Pilin Yapu was hired as the principal of Daguan Elementary School, Taichung City. He invested Tayal education reform soon after the hiring.
In 2015, a new school name “P'UMA” (in Tayal) was selected. P'uma means keeping the fire flaming in the traditional house, implying the ethnic education generation by generation.
Since 2016, ethnic education formally implemented. More than 2,000 courses have been developed for the 6 grades, all of which are integrated into Tayal culture, divided into seven major aspects: Tayal literature, Social organization, Spiritual culture, Ecological wisdom, Life skills, Tribal history, and Art/Music/Dance.
All the courses were designed and taught by the cooperation of tribal elders, handcrafters, and kids’ parents.
All kids like ethnic education very much. The learning effectiveness improves significantly not only ethnic courses but general courses.
From 2013 to today, photographer Hayung has also come to promote photography courses for school kids. Hayung uses static courses with dynamic outdoor shooting courses, and does not limit kids' imagination with ‘technology’, so that kids can enjoy their own feelings.
Some tiny things that are easy to ignore for adults may capture by kids, and presenting one after another unexpected perfection.
Principal Pilin Yapu said that photography teaching is actually a part of moral education. The photographs can reflect the mood and inner world of kids.
Now, let’s enjoy the P'uma’s camera!
