Having been initiated by the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) in 2013, the Science Images competition and exhibition are now in their 5th year. The abundant scientific achievements and knowledge of the Chinese world serve as the foundation for these activities. Moreover, through call for submissions, competition, exhibition, educational activities, special publications, media promotion and traveling exhibition, the energy of citizen science photographers is released and the public can come closer to museums.

Since 2017, the call for submissions and review process have been conducted in Taiwan and China in alternating years. The 4th Scientific Photography Competition was organized by the Beijing Museum of Natural History. That year, there were 1,098 entries. Among them, 31 were from Taiwan and 1,067 from China. Thirty-five images received awards. Among them, 22 were from Taiwan (including 1 first prize, 1 second prize and 1 third prize). The remaining 12 were from China (including 1 second prize, 1 third prize and 2 special youth awards).

The 5th Amazing New Visions: Science Images Competition was organized by NMNS. There was a total of 809 entries. Among them, 531 were from Taiwan and 278 from China. There were also 28 video entries from Taiwan. Most entries were submitted by students. Other occupations included military personnel, civil servants, teachers, service industry workers and freelance. In addition, participants were mostly aged 21-30, followed by those aged 11-20 and 31-50. A panel of experts from various fields selected 56 award-winning works. Among them, 49 were from Taiwan (including 3 merit awards, 1 Quanta Culture and Education Foundation Special Youth Award, 1 Viewers’ Choice Video Award and 1 Judges’ Prize Video Award), 6 were from China and 1 was from Hong Kong.

The Glimmering Puzzles Special Exhibition includes award-winning images from the 4th and 5th science images competitions. Most are of insects and spiders. The remaining images are in the following categories: animal puzzles, stars and planets, underwater and marine life, physics and chemistry, plants and fungi and microscopic world.

The ancient philosopher Laozi once said, “Sharp edges become smooth, chaos is resolved, light’s reflection becomes soft and dust settles into place.” Facing the birth and disappearance of all things in the universe, from the photographer’s perspective, time and space are parallel. They search for those moments when different life forms intersect and master light and angle to capture images that unravel chaotic and unsolved scientific riddles.

At the core of Chu De-hua’s linear sculpture series, “A Gaze into the Illusory Transformation” are the geometry of light and shadow and the gaps between mountains and water. Drifting light and shadows extend from the corridor into the exhibition gallery, creating a sense of transparency and separation between the two-dimensional photographs and three-dimensional mesh sculptures, bringing us into the four-dimensional exhibition environment with the addition of the aspect of time.
