(Spirits of the Bamboo Forest (Bioluminescent Fungi))

Thebioluminescent fungi (Mycena chlorophos) are one of the rare nighttime luminescent fungus found in Taiwan. They are called “Fox fire” or “Will-o’-the-wisp” in North America, “Kitsunebi” in Japan and “Spirit of the night” in Taiwan. During the evenings of the rainy season, the dim green light emitted from the fungi makes them look like little green lamps. Picky in choosing their habitat, they avoid contaminated or human interfered environments. In recent years, they are seen as an indicator for environmental quality. Once the fungi bear fruit, they have 3 days to live.  It glows the brightest on the first day, but as the time gets closer, only the cap of the fungi will glow. If taken into a dark room during the daytime, it will not illuminate, and only does so during nighttime. A phenomenon that continues to baffle scientists.
