(The Eclosion of Scieroptera formosana)

紅腳黑翅蟬白天羽化的品種。紅色在自然界是警告色，剛羽化時全身紅，可以在白天羽化。以前紀錄大都在北部。中部從5月中至6月初不到一個月時間出現，其他時間不見蹤影。但北部6月才出現，時間比較長。屬於群居性昆蟲，通常很多隻聚在寄主植物上，雄蟲鳴叫聲音小。羽化時間為30分鐘至1時，剛羽化個體翅膀和身體為白色，待翅膀完全伸展開始晾翅約1時，翅膀及身體由白轉黑，頭胸部為黑色，腹部及腳為紅色，此時具備飛行及交配能力。由於成蟲生命期短，完成變色之後會盡快交尾。奇特羽化與體色轉變，著實令人驚嘆萬物之奇妙。

The Scieroptera formosana is a cicada species that goes through eclosion during the daytime. In the natural world red is a warning color. When it first comes out of eclosion, the whole body is red.  In the past this species was mostly recorded up north.  Activity in the central part of Taiwan was limited to less than a month, from mid-May to early June. Activity up north lasted longer but didn’t start until June. It is a gregarious species, which usually gathers in clusters on the host plant, with Male chirping sound being soft. The entire process of eclosion takes from thirty minutes to an hour. At first, the wings and the body are white; the expansion and drying of the wings take about an hour. The wings and body will then gradually turn from white to black with the head and chest black and abdomen and legs red. At this stage, the Scieroptera formosana cicada is capable of flying and mating. Since its lifespan is short, it will mate right after the completion of its color change. The whole process of eclosion is only something for one to behold.
