( Evolutionary Oceanic Window to the Soul)

不同門海洋動物的眼睛,可觀察從簡單的1D點狀到3D球狀的演化趨勢。扁蟲動物門只具有散狀感光的點眼,複雜的脊椎動物門則升級到可調焦距成像功能。扁形動物雖然多是掠食性,但主食為靜止的濾食動物,如海鞘。只具少數散布眼點,應該只能判斷明暗。寄居蟹視覺靈敏、行動敏捷,外界稍微有所動靜,躲入殼中露出柄狀複眼觀察外界。而脊椎動物的魚(魚由科)有水晶體與網膜構造,其功能可與人眼相匹比。


By looking at the eyes of different marine animals, one can observe the evolutionary trend, from the 1 dimensional dot shaped eyes to the well-rounded 3 dimensional shaped eyes. The flat worm (Platyhelminthes) species only have two scattered dot like eyes for sensing the light, the more complicated vertebrae on the other hand have eyes upgraded with ability to formulate and focus on images.  Although flat worms (Platyhelminthes) are mostly predatory in nature, they mainly feed on motionless filter feeders, such as sea squirts. They only have eyes that can most likely only differentiate between light and darkness. The hermit crab is a visually sensitive and agile creature. Any signs of movement will have them retreat back into their shells sticking out their handle like eyes as a form of surveillance.  Whereas the vertebrae fish species such as the scorpion fish (Scorpionfish) have lens and retina comparable in ability to those of a human being.
